Org. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.This internship position is located in the Marine and Freshwater Branch (MFWB) in the Ecosystems Division of the UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.The internship is for a minimum of three (3) months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of six (6) months, depending on the needs of the Marine and Freshwater Branch.Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours), under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern. Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Head of Communication and Influencers in the Marine and Freshwater Branch, the Intern will:• Support a wide range of communication and outreach needs and outputs including, drafting briefing notes, speeches, policy briefs, and press releases; and content development such as video scriptwriting for public service announcements, web stories, website and social media text;• Support development of multimedia communications assets across digital and traditional mediums;• Support dissemination of content through media and networks;• Support implementation of creative campaigns;• Analyze social media efforts and create reports on Campaign Activations;• Promote networking and building relationships with local organizations, groups or individuals and supporting and/or participating in local volunteering initiatives;• Undertake programme and policy research as directed;• Liaise with service providers and creative partners;• Initiate and help coordinate youth engagement and/or engage with existing initiatives;• Other duties to support the work of the Branch as requested and in accordance with the Intern's interests. Education Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:•Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);•Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); OR•Have graduated with a university degree.•Preferred area of study: graduation programme focused on International Relations, Communication studies or related field. •Applicants must be pursuing qualifications in an area of study that can significantly contribute to the responsibilities outlined and overall work of the Marine and Freshwater Branch;•Be computer literate in standard software applications;•Have good analytical skills;•Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and has a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter;•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.Upon completion of the assignment it is anticipated that the Intern will:•Have improved communication skills through interaction with UNEP staff, Executive and Senior Management, governments and partner organizations;•Have gained a better understanding of UNEP's operations and the overall United Nations system.
