DEPARTMENT: Kenya Programs
OFFICE HOURS: Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
POSITION STATUS:Management (Without Overtime)
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: Reports to Head of School

GENERAL SUMMARY:The Deputy Head of School occupies a pivotal position at Flying Kites Leadership Academy (the “School”) with responsibility for all daily operations and administration of the School under the guidance and in the absence of the Head of School. He/she is responsible for promoting and maintaining a culture of academic excellence in a supportive and collaborative environment consistent with the School’s “whole child model,” directing all aspects of the academic program, including core curriculum advancement, standards of instruction, monitoring and evaluation of goals and impact, and pastoral care of students. He/she assists the Head of School in the recruitment, performance management and disciplinary action of teachers, establishing goals and expected competencies for each teacher and managing performance to expected standards. The Deputy Head of School arranges and participates in regular meetings with the Head of School, Teachers, Counselors, Parents/Guardians and all stakeholders to discuss student progress. Finally, the Deputy Head of School teaches at least two subjects, promoting high levels of student engagement and a high standard of achievement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:“Essential duties” are those that an individual must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation or additional staffing support.
? Work flexibly and professionally with the Head of School, teachers, and leadership cohorts to support the successful day-to-day management and administration of the School.
? Provide leadership on all aspects of School management in the absence of the Head of School.
? Assist the Head of School in actively monitoring and reviewing the quality of teaching and learning; including regular assessments, recordkeeping, and reporting students’ attainment to all statutory bodies.
? Develop and support clear policies and procedures to ensure outstanding performance.
? Assist the Head of School in the recruitment, performance management, coaching, training, and disciplinary plans for teachers.
? Schedule, set the agenda, and attend all school meetings with teachers and staff.
? Plan and oversee the School’s assembly program, engaging teachers and other staff, as appropriate.
? Assist in setting School exam schedules and carrying out all exams consistent with established protocol.
? Participate in the marking of assessments, the preparation of teaching programs and the development of cross curriculum links.
? Work in conjunction with the Head of School to conceive, arrange and organise relevant field trips and visits.
? Maintain clear and professional communications and work relations with employees of all designations.
? Serve as a role model by maintaining a positive school ethos and being proactive in the pastoral care of pupils, ensuring the School’s policy for behavior and discipline is applied consistently and fairly.
? Promote and facilitate positive and collaborative relationships with guardians and other school stakeholders.
? Teach a minimum of two subjects and serve as a role model to all teachers for curriculum development, classroom management, student engagement, and student outcomes.
? Support and actively promote the School’s “whole child” model.
? Ensure compliance with Health and Safety standards, including training of relevant employees.
? Uphold and enforce all School rules and policies; work in cooperation with other teachers and employees to ensure standards of behavior and discipline levels of pupils are maintained.
? Ensure high levels of excellence in academic and extracurricular activities at all times.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

Education and Work Experience:
? Bachelor’s degree in Education
? Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a school leadership position
? History of excellence as a teacher
? Proven leadership ability in school administration, curriculum development, program monitoring and evaluation, staff training and development, school improvement, and performance management
? Must be well-versed with the 8-4-4 curriculum & trained on the Competency Based Curriculum “CBC”

? A passion for education, social justice and children.
? Thinks clearly and logically in working through problems, seeking referrals and guidance as appropriate.

? Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with appropriate discretion.
? Ability to respond quickly and maintain composure in situations that impact the safety and security of children.
? Ability to exercise judgment and discretion when making independent decisions.

Additional Requirements:
? An incident-free Children’s Check and National Police Check (Certificate of Good Conduct) is a strict condition of employment and must be provided at time of hire and updated on request.
? Weekend and after-hours work is expected and required to meet organisational priorities.
? Occasional travel may be required.
? Additional responsibilities may be assigned to support coverage for colleagues who are absent, on holiday or personal leave.

? All Kenya-based positions are based from the Njabini campus and subject to occasional interruptions in power and/or Internet access.
? All of our programs and objectives serve children from preschool through young adults. Our workplace is thus regularly accessed and impacted by children.
