Overall Purpose
The GIS Intern will play an important role in assisting the Research Unit reach its objectives in generation of research knowledge for evidence based decision making in the Humanitarian sector
Duties and Responsibilities
Collection and analysis of geospatial data from openly available resources
Earth observation imagery acquisition, cleaning and information extraction e.g. spectral indices, time series analysis from both commercial and open datasets e.g. LANDSAT, sentinel 1
Analyzing disasters from spatial datasets using open platforms such as QGIS, google earth engine, R, python
Generation of well-designed outputs in form of tables, graphs and maps for better communication and decision making using open tools
Storing spatial data in databases using open source database management systems e.g MySQL, MongoDB
Automation of spatial analysis work flows in QGIS, R, Python
Collection of field data using open data toolkit
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in geo-information or any other related field with a relevant academic experience
Desired Competencies
Proven competence in using open source GIS application software e.g QGIS, python, R
Collection of spatial data using open data kit (open map kit will be an added advantage)
Programming and automation of spatial processes using GIS programming e.g. R, python
Familiarization of big spatial data using google earth engine
Intermediate knowledge of statistical open source statistical software
Intermediate knowledge in using open source database management systems will be an added advantage
Knowledge of creation of visualization dashboards will be an added advantage
Good cartographical skills using graphic design software e.g. Inkscape will be an added advantage
Good English writing, reporting and communication skills
Experience working in humanitarian organization will be an added advantage
Eagerness to learn new skillsets
