The Aga Khan Education Services, Kenya, (AKES,K) is currently looking to appoint a Head of Human Resources (HR) based in Nairobi, to provide strategic and operational management for HR matters. The successful candidate will lead the process of implementing HR developments and improvements, ensure effective implementation of plans within the field units, manage the HR function, and ensure effective implementation of HR policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Strategic PlanningProvide direction to the AKES,K people strategy and align it to the overall organizational plans.

Develop strategies to position the organization as an employer of choice

Drive a culture of performance effectiveness, approachability and partnership with managers and staff.

Drive the preparation and monitoring of the country staffing budget.

Recruitment

Ensure that job descriptions and selection criteria and specifications are in place for all positions.

Drive the recruitment and selection process across the organization to attract and recruit high-calibre staff.

Ensure that the recruitment team provides timely support to senior managers and Heads of School for recruiting teaching and non-teaching staff.

Develop and implement an orientation programme for all new hires.

Compensation & Benefits

Formulate and maintain salary and grading structures, in consultation with senior management and AKES Head of HR.

Develop and manage employee compensation and benefits that attract and retain high calibre staff.

Keep abreast of market practices and engage in market compensation surveys on a regular basis

Oversee the payroll process to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing.

Performance Management

Work with the AKESK senior management team and AKES Head of HR to establish and maintain an effective Performance Management System for teachers, academic and support staff.

Ensure effective implementation and review of a Performance Management System for continuous improvement in employee performance.

Embed an appropriate performance management culture across the organization.

HR Policies and Compliance

Develop, implement and regularly review human resource policies aligned with AKES,K objectives, Kenyan employment law and AKES global HR policies.

Develop channels of communication and clearly defined procedures for allowing all employees to voice their suggestions, concerns, opinions and grievances.

Ensure compliance with the local labour laws and other statutory compliances, while also ensuring compliance with AKES policies and ethics.

Employee Engagement & Development

Conduct and review employee engagement surveys to assess and promote staff engagement and development and monitor staff wellbeing.

Work with AKES,K senior management to manage collective employee relations and union representation.

Facilitate employee learning and development programmes in consultation with the senior management team.

Work with AKES,K senior management team for developing career paths and succession plans for key positions.

HR Information Systems and Reporting

Work with the IT support and other senior management team for the development of an HRIS.

Prepare monthly and quarterly reports on key HR activities (HR Dashboard) and submit to AKES,K senior management team and AKES Head Office, as required.

Use the HR reporting metrics to analyse and monitor HR activity trends and make recommendations where necessary.

The requirements
Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) or Higher Diploma in Human Resource Management from a recognized institution.

Member with a valid practicing licence from the Institute of Human Resources Management (IHRM).

Master’s degree with specialization in HR, and/or an MBA would be ideal.

In addition to initial post-graduate work experience, at least 10 years experience in Human Resources, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership and managerial capacity.

Experience of HR strategies and how they can be deployed effectively, and working with senior management teams and Boards in effective application of HR strategies.

Strong interpersonal skills and people management skills, and the ability to contribute as a member of the AKESK senior management team.

Role model for performance effectiveness, approachability and partnership.

Advocate for diversity, pluralism and the unique place and contribution every individual makes to the community.

Thorough knowledge of Kenyan labour laws and compliance requirements.

Experience in the education sector is preferred.
