Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

Within the Global Solutions Division, The Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the tools and methodology production and skills centre of the UN-Habitat, that develops normative guidance and cutting-edge tools through communities of urban practice. It provides technical and policy advice approaches and methodologies to Multi-Country Offices/ Country Offices, governments and partners and mainstreams them throughout the programme portfolio.

The intern will be assigned to the Human Rights and Social Inclusion Unit. The Human Rights and Social Inclusion Unit (HRSI) falls under the Urban Practices Branch. The HRSI Unit carries out on two tracks: the social inclusion dimension, which encompasses human rights; gender; children, youth and older persons; and disability; and cross-cutting thematic area: safety.

The Human Rights and Social Inclusion Unit, Urban Practices Branch internship is for 6 months.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the Supervision of the unit, the intern will:
Assist with the core roles and responsibilities of the Unit, including:
- Advocacy
- Capacity building
- Project development
- Research
- Assisting with project review for cross-cutting issues (gender, youth, human rights, and other vulnerable groups such as older persons, children and persons with disabilities)
- Supporting activities related to the overall management of the Human Rights and Social Inclusion Unit Community of Practice, including but not limited to:
- Supporting the establishment of a functioning online knowledge management system and associated tools for the Community of Practice to support internal exchange, learning and communication, which will be consistent with that of other Communities of Practice, likely using Microsoft Teams;
- Supporting preparations for Community of Practice meetings, such as preparing background documents, talking points, PowerPoint presentations and other tools to engage meeting participants in discussion and learning;
- In collaboration with other team members, support logistics during webinars and other online meetings and activities; including using Microsoft Teams;
- Supporting reporting efforts related to the Community of Practice activities, such as consolidation of inputs, and producing meeting minutes and/or reports

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of Study:
Must be currently enrolled in the final year of a bachelor’s degree, or an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Gender studies, Human Rights, sociology, anthropology, political science, development studies, development management or a related field

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in English is required.

United Nations Considerations
