Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.The Urban Basic Services Section of UN-Habitat is building capacity of city officials and other stakeholders on data collection and evidence-based planning of interventions to improve municipal solid waste management systems, as well as monitoring progress towards waste related Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, it is leading UN-Habitat’s global Waste Wise Cities programme and the Africa Clean Cities Platform.The Urban Basic Services Section internship is for 6 months.In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.Under the Supervision of Associated Human Settlements Officers the intern will:- Support waste management projects managed by the unit, especially Waste Wise Cities and African Clean Cities Platform. This includes research on awareness raising programmes, contributing to the bi-monthly newsletter, supporting member cities, preparing events, etc. - Assist with concept note development for project preparation - Provide research for backgrounders/information materials; - Undertake other assignments as required for the development and implementation of the work programme of the Urban Basic Services Section Competencies Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively. No professional work experience is required, but an advantage.Excellent knowledge in waste management is required, hands-on experience in waste management projects, waste data collection, social media, campaign work and environmental education are an asset.
