Job purpose: Education Development Trust aims to enhance the learning outcomes and transition of girls inmarginalised contexts in Kenya. In partnership with the project schools, Ed Dev Trust providesteacher training opportunities, teacher coaching, school leadership strengthening program,teaching and learning materials, counselling of learners and home - based support for learningand psychosocial support.The Numeracy Lead will provide technical oversight and is responsible for WWW programinterventions aimed at improving the quality of instructional practice and student outcomes inMathematics for learners in the WWW project as well as education system strengthening forimproved Numeracy outcomes in the project. Required Qualification• Bachelor’s degree in education preferably with specialisation in English.• Additional training in linguistics, reading education, curriculum and instruction, teachingmethods in Language, tests and measures will be an added advantage.Scope: Will involve relocation and/or frequent travel to remote locations within Kenya.Person specification:KnowledgeEssential:• Proven knowledge in literacy and learning outcomes improvement strategies for primaryand secondary school learners.Desirable:• Demonstrated technical expertise in teaching and learning materials development.• In depth knowledge and experience to advice on a wide range of technical issues relatedto literacy – particularly research based practices in reading and writing instruction, literacyassessment, gender responsive instructional design, systems strengthening approachesfor literacy.ExperienceEssential:• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in planning and implementing of literacy improvementprograms targeting training teachers, strategies for improvement of literacy learningoutcomes among primary and secondary school learners and system strengthening.Desirable:• Prior experience in Education project management, and familiarity with donor projectmanagement policies, procedure and reporting requirements• Demonstrated understanding of the Kenyan Education sector and knowledge on inclusionpractices.At least five years of demonstrated excellence in a management position, preferablyincluding direct supervision of professional and support staff, and quality evaluation of staffperformance and deliverables is required• Prior experience collecting and analysing literacy related data• Experience related to parent and community engagement.• Experience teaching in primary or secondary schools or training teachers of English atTeacher Training Colleges strongly preferred.• Practical experience of building networks and engaging with coalitions.SkillsEssential:• Ability to organize and conduct trainings and technical workshops related to literacy.• Good analytical skills and ability to communicate analysed data and reports to a range ofaudience.• Very good interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation andcoaching.• Ability to work effectively in teams from diverse backgrounds• Demonstrated ability to set and deliver on priorities.Job objectives:1. Assess teaching and learning gaps in English among primary and secondary schoollearners and provide advice for improvements.2. Provide input into the revision of teacher training guides to address learning gaps amonglearners in primary and secondary schools and other related implementation tools andguidelines.3. Responsible for day-to-day planning and implementation of English language learningimprovement activities with agreed work plans including teacher training, classroomobservation and support of head teacher and teacher coaching as well as home basedliteracy improvement programs.4. In collaboration with the Regional Coordinators, supervise coaches and lead teachertrainings, tracking their day to day tasks and providing them with required guidance andinstruction on implementing literacy improvement programs for the project.5. Collaborate with the Inclusive Education Specialist in ensuring sufficient strategies are inplace to improve literacy outcomes for SNE learners.6. Provide technical contribution to the design of M&E tools, data collection and analysis forimproved of literacy programming.7. Evaluate, through data and site visits, the effectiveness of literacy related activities andmake recommendations for improvement to meet project goals, especially student learningoutcomes.8. Support documentation and report writing related to the literacy program in alignment withproject requirements.9. Represent WWW literacy program in stakeholder forums when required.10. Any other task assigned by the supervisor.
