Overview

Maternal Newborn Health Technical Advisor needed to provide technical and program support in the areas of maternal and newborn health, with a wide range of potential activities. This includes for Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) as a critical approach for improving quality of care for maternal and neonatal health, supporting Helping Mothers Survive training and research initiatives, and supporting overall MNH service delivery continuity. MNH Advisor will engage with cross cutting teams and program elements including family planning, quality improvement, health systems strengthening, workforce capacity building, community, and gender. MNH Advisor will also manage/coordinate the integration of these technical areas with other MCGL components such as child health, nutrition and immunization, and in collaboration with MCGL partners, support the design of clinical service delivery strategies.

USAID’s Momentum Country and Global Leadership (MCGL) award is a five-year USAID funded global award, that will work in tandem with country governments and local nongovernmental organizations to provide targeted technical and capacity development assistance, and contribute to the global technical leadership and policy dialogue on improving measurable outcomes for maternal, reproductive, newborn and child health, and voluntary family planning. The Helping Mother Survive Secretariat aims to ensure that women and newborns worldwide receive high-quality care by equipping health professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.

Responsibilities

Support implementation and/or development of approaches in maternal and newborn health including basic and/or comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care and MPDSR.
Support country programs with strategic program guidance, staff training, capacity building and materials development.
Support capacity building activities, including webinars, training, coaching, mentoring and learning for staff and global/local partners using Helping Mothers Survive training and other Jhpiego/MCGL approaches.
Work with country program teams to ensure programs implement high-quality MNH technical approaches that are evidence-based and responsive to the needs of the countries and applicable donors
Provide technical input on country workplans and reports and review program data and results to inform decision-making and technical strategies
Provide Helping Mothers Survive training to develop cohorts of trainers for UNICEF in South Sudan, the postpartum hemorrhage bundle research in 5 countries, and other HMS Secretariat projects.
Motivate and mentor assigned staff and consultants
Identify and disseminate best practices and new technical strategies and approaches in areas of expertise
Identify and recommend opportunities for scale up of technical programs worldwide
Keep the MCGL, HMS and Jhpiego technical, program and new program development staff informed of successes, challenges, and lessons learned in implementing programs in areas of technical expertise
Collaborate with key MNH global partners including WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, FIGO and ICM
Represent Jhpiego and MCGL in global, regional, and national professional fora by participating and presenting in pertinent meetings and conferences
Represent Jhpiego externally, including supporting the documentation of program results in international conferences and peer-reviewed journals and publications
Engage in the business development/proposal process as needed by identifying and supporting new opportunities and by contributing to the technical design, writing, and review of new proposals

Required Qualifications

Midwife or physician (with obstetric skills), with MPH or equivalent
10+ years of relevant technical experience implementing and/or managing international field based MNH programs in Africa and Asia
Strong clinical background and experience preferred
Demonstrated experience in the implementation of capacity building programs for improving service delivery
Ability to coach, mentor and develop capacity in regional and national programs and technical staff in the areas maternal and newborn health, performance and quality improvement
Ability to provide clinical skills training that is simulation, facility-based, and team focused with a preference for a strong clinical training background using Helping Mothers Survive
Awareness of, sensitivity to, and experience in working in multiple socio-economic settings and with multi-cultural staff and groups
Ability to provide technical and organizational leadership in international fora
Ability to develop productive working relationships with counterparts in other agencies and organizations worldwide
Proven leadership and management skills with the ability to multi task
Strong verbal, written and presentation skills
Excellent skills in facilitation, team building and coordination
Fluent English language skills
Lived and worked in one or more developing countries in Africa and Asia preferred
Willingness and ability to travel up to 70% internationally preferred
