To date, the bulk of plastic that MGA collects originates in landfills and informal dumps,
and is purchased from waste pickers at one of MGA’s 25 trading points. These trading points, located
in low-income areas of Nairobi and operated by MGA employed clerks, offer the opportunity for
waste pickers to sell plastic in a safe and trusted environment, at a fair price. However, to have an
even greater impact, engage those who currently don’t see value in trading plastics, increase
efficiency and obtain higher quality plastic earlier in the waste stream (before it has the chance to
end up in waterways, streets, informal dumps and landfills), MGA has developed the MGA Modern
Trade Team. The Modern Trade Team aims to change the perception of waste amongst consumers
of plastics and provide them an opportunity to engage with MGA in a clean, welcoming and
convenient environment.
