Details of the offer

To help coordinate operations of multiple research projects and support the Programme Leader in the running of all projects under the Push–Pull flagship (www.push-pull.net) on duties ranging from designing and conducting scientific research, project operational management, on-station and farmer-based research supervision, to developing partnerships for implementation, scaling and dissemination of research results. This will include cutting-edge scientific leadership to scientists and technical staff to further develop, adapt, optimize and scale up a more resilient Push–Pull system suitable to a broad range of agro-ecosystems and farming systems

Responsibilities

1. Undertake new research to further adapt the Push–Pull technology to improve its resilience and pest management efficiency under variable climate scenarios.
2. Undertake new research on intensification of the Push–Pull system, developing and testing various agronomic designs to integrate high value crops (e.g. vegetables) in Push–Pull systems and elucidating the chemical ecology of pest management.

3. Contribute to the development, validation and dissemination of effective and sustainable IPM options to counter the invasive fall armyworm. This will include undertaking research into Push–Pull biological control mechanisms and developing a new habitat management system for managing the fall armyworm through exploitation of chemical ecology and insect behaviour as well as enhancing crop diversity and ecosystem services.

4. Conduct research on scaling up of the climate-resilient Push–Pull technology through target-specific dissemination and impact pathways, partnerships and private-sector involvement. 5. Carry out research on the impact of the Push–Pull system on soil health improvement and its possible role in climate change mitigation.

6. Carry out research on Push–Pull and food safety through control of aflatoxin contamination in maize.

7. Collaborate with the Social Science and Impact Assessment Unit on identifying key research areas and impact evaluation of the Push–Pull system.

8. Collaborate with the Behavioural and Chemical Ecology Unit in efforts to elucidate various aspects of tritrophic interactions between plants, pests and their natural enemies.

9. Develop partnerships and collaborate with research laboratories in developed countries as well as with national and regional institutions (including national extension services), the private sector, not-for-profits, and farmers’ and trade organisations to support research, adoption and scaling.

10. Offer scientific leadership and mentorship to peers and students on different aspects of research, including experimental design, methodologies, statistical analyses, publications and technical reporting.

11. Contribute significantly to development of research partnerships, grant development and fund-raising.

12. Publish research papers in high impact leading journals.

13. Be a representative of the Push–Pull flagship, and make major contributions to seminars, workshops and trainings.

14. Effectively supervise research staff, MSc and PhD students, and interns
