Lutheran World Federation World Service Kenya Program is seeking to recruit a Kenyan national for the following position to be based in Kakuma.

Position : Special Needs Education Teachers

The Special Needs Education Teacher will be responsible for developing and fostering appropriate skills and social abilities to enable learners achieve optimum development according to age, ability and aptitude in the following areas of specialization Braille 1, KSL 1, Intellectual challenge and Learning Disabilities 1, Developmental disabilities e.g. autism 1, multiple disability and Basic Psychosocial Support 1.

The incumbent will report directly to Head Teacher or his/her designate.

Duties and responsibilities

Teaching of the primary school children with special needs according to the Competency Based Curriculum to improve quality education. Overall responsible for implementing and evaluating curriculum in the least restrictive environment to children with disabilities in inclusive settings, supporting learners and advocating for inclusion. Establish and maintain up to date professional and administrative records. Train and support children with disabilities in co-curriculum activities through inclusive clubs and other avenues in the schools. Provide technical support to regular teachers on inclusive education matters to meet individual learners’ needs through development and implementation of IEP’s to learners’ eligible for specialised services in special classrooms and resource rooms before their transition to regular classrooms (for those who are able to). Capacity building of Refugee teachers on learning needs of children with disabilities, modification and accommodation of children with special needs as well as on inclusive models. Provide itinerant services in areas of specialization. Support EARC outreach services and role in; identification, assessment, school placement and intervention recommendations for learners with disabilities. Organizing the classroom and learning resources to create a positive learning environment. Assist teachers to develop learning resources using locally available materials, organize a resource room and help with utilizing them to enable all learners to access learning in participatory manners Planning, preparing and presenting lessons that cater for the needs of the whole ability range within their class. Motivating pupils with enthusiastic, imaginative presentation through provision of stimulating activities that will arouse their curiosity, interest and enhance their discovery and observation skills. Enhancing learning for children with disabilities through utilization of e-learning options Identify the need for assistive devices and refer children with disabilities while trainng them on the use of assistive devices. Staying up to date with changes and developments in the Competence Based Curriculum structure. Lobbying for parental involvement while educating parents/ caregivers of children with disabilities on their rights Working with the school management and other stakeholders to ensure meaningful participation of learners with disabilities in all aspects of education. Guide and train parents of children with disability on basic concepts for care and development of learners with disabilities Involve the refugee community through the awareness forums on matters inclusion of learners with disabilities. Together with the community mobilizers, conduct community mobilization and sensitization on significance of education for children with disabilities.

Academic and professional Qualifications

P1 Certificate from Kenya National Examination Council, with a Diploma in Inclusive Education or SNE from Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) or its equivalent. Proficiency in one of the skills/competencies should be highlighted; either Communication skills for VI-Braille (1), Communication skills for HI- KSL (1), Intellectual challenges and Learning Disabilities (1), Children with other disabilities I.e.Developmental disabilities e.g. autism (1) and Guidance & Counselling in inclusive settings (1) Registered by Teachers Service Commission Computer literacy

Desirable:

Experience of working in Refugee schools or with refugee community in the camp or urban set up. Exemplary guidance and counselling skills, and experience in provision of psychosocial support to families of children with disabilities Ability to use e-learning devices for teaching, data collection, analysis and dissemination Passionate for inclusive education and some experience in mainstreaming child protection and gender issues in education High level of integrity, commitment and professional responsibility. Ability to tolerate cultural, educational and religious diversity in the work place. Good analytical and problem solving skills.
