Job Description/Requirements

Background:
The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is engaged in a
five-year Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention-Kenya (CDC-Kenya) to build capacity and provide
technical assistance to the Ministry of Health and its partners for
conducting HIV and STI surveillance.

We are recruiting an individual through our affiliated international
NGO Global Programs for Research & Training to serve as a Statistician.
This position requires a one-year commitment, with the potential for
extension at the end of the period, subject to funding availability.

Under the supervision of the Medical Epidemiologist the Statistician
will work with the UCSF and Global Programs in-country team, the
National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP), and other partners to
support HIV surveillance activities.

Roles & Responsibilities:
• Supporting protocol development in relation to sample size calculations and sampling design.
• Participate in planning, designing and implementation of surveillance or monitoring and evaluation projects.
• Conduct analysis of data for assigned projects.
• Provide interpretation of statistical analysis and results.
• Provide advice on implications of results from statistical analysis for program planning and decision making.
• Provide support in the development of training materials for
biostatistics, data analysis and utilization of statistical software for
analysis.
• Assist in manuscript preparation.
• Participate in provision of training to MOH and its partners in
biostatistics, data analysis, utilization of software and interpretation
of analysis.
• Support survey data management procedures from data collection,
transmission, cleaning to regular provision of data accrual and quality
feedback to investigators and field staff.
• Manage survey data cleaning process in preparation for data analysis.

Minimum Requirements:
• A Master’s degree in statistics/biostatistics, computer science/IT
studies, or related field with minimum five years working experience is
required, or a bachelor’s degree with five years of progressive
professional experience.
• At least two years of relevant experience working with a DBMS (e.g., Access, MySQL).
• Proficiency in at least one software package (e.g., SAS/STATA/R)
for analysis and data cleaning and consistent use of package for a
minimum of three years.
• Experience with managing computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) software such as ODK/CSPro/QDS, or similar.
• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
• Fluency in English is required.

Preferred skills/qualities:
• Experience managing survey data.
• Ability to prioritize, work under deadlines, work with minimal supervision and multitask.
• Knowledge of concepts of public health, epidemiology and surveillance.
