The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is promoting approaches towards more sustainable agricultural systems that contribute to the elimination of hunger and malnutrition and are adapted to the impacts of climate change. The international donor initiative “Water and Energy for Food” (WE4F) is one central element in achieving this through the championing of innovative technologies and services related to the water-energy-food nexus
The BMZ-funded component of WE4F is implemented in the framework of the special initiative “A World without Hunger” (SEWOH) in East and West Africa. It supports innovative businesses and organisations through financial and technical assistance within a vibrant ecosystem for innovations to thrive.

The position of Technical Advisor is based East Africa Hub of WE4F in Nairobi. Activities are implemented across the region.

The advisor is responsible for
Business development support for awardees of the WE4F Call(s) for Funding

Initiation, formulation and implementation of partnerships with the private sector (PPPs, iEPWs)

Assisting project/programme initiatives to provide professional advisory services to and cooperate with a broad range of target groups

Innovation and knowledge management

Qualifications
University degree in Business Development, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Rural Development or related field

Demonstrated excellent understanding of strategies for how to help businesses grow, with expertise in one or more of the following areas: business finance, business planning and strategy, sales and marketing, product development, or human resource management.

Professional experience

5+ years of experience in SME development, business operations, financial services, consulting or marketing.

Worked in a start-up or small and medium-sized business environment, and/or have direct experience supporting SMEs.

Deep understanding of go-to market and growth strategies for businesses in the water, energy and food/ agriculture sectors.

Ability to develop project concepts for partnerships with the private sector

Ability to produce business and financial models and to assess business models.

Previous coaching, teaching, training, or facilitation experience preferred.

Good networks in the water, energy and/or agriculture sectors with public institutions, research organisations and private sector in Kenya and East Africa

Other knowledge, additional competences

Have passion for and excellent understanding of the East African, especially Kenyan, entrepreneurship ecosystem

Excellent communication skills in English and Kiswahili

Excellent team spirit and networking

Highly motivated to work in a multicultural environment

Strong organizational competence

Proactive, independent and flexible working style

Willingness to travel abroad and to project sites in Kenya

Responsibilities

1.Advising project partners
The advisor

Serves as contact point for the awardees of the regional Call for Funding for technical as well as procedural matters.

Provides practical, strategic advisory and technical assistance across the areas of finance, sales and marketing, and operations to help awardees harness opportunities, structure their businesses more effectively, and catalyse growth.

Works closely with awardees on their portfolio to articulate growth plans to scale their businesses and connects them to financial services.

Identifies shared problems of awardees and initiates, coordinates and assists with capacity development activities

Initiates, coordinates and assists with the development and implementation of pilot projects of innovative business models and partnerships (including PPPs/ iEPWs) that demonstrate the impact of climate-friendly and resource efficient innovations

Designs, prepares and implements training workshops, seminars, study tours, e-learning courses and other events on issues related to business and innovation development in the water, energy and food/ agriculture sectors

Provides technical inputs on proposals and activities of the WE4F Hub

Develops and organises quality assurance measures and suggests necessary changes, improvements and initiatives

Contributes to the effective monitoring and reporting of results and impacts of project activities with partners

2.Networking and cooperation

The advisor

Researches markets and identifies strategic partners for Public Private Partnerships, networking support of awardees of Call for Funding and leveraging of further investments.

Builds effective networks of entrepreneurs, investors, financial institutions, policy makers, sector associations, business networks, research institutions and universities.

Supports cooperation, regular contact and dialogue with partners, assists with PR work and cooperates with local communities, relevant organisations, businesses, non-governmental agencies and individuals in the project/programme environment and with other projects to improve and maintain good working relationships

Communicates local interests and efforts, forwards these and encourages sharing ideas and information for the benefit of the project/programme

3.Knowledge management

The advisor

Develops in-depth knowledge about business development practices, marketing activities, and industry trends in the water, energy and food/ agriculture sectors.in East African countries.

Coordinates studies of business models/ cases, including directly and through third parties (identification of consultants/ partner organisation, drafting TORs, contract management, coaching and guidance; final assessment)

Develops ready-to-use strategies and technical concepts, including guidelines, manuals and procedures and assists with research activities and studies for the project.

Proactively and creatively comes up with ways for how knowledge/ learning experiences of the project are documented and disseminated.

Ensures that relevant knowledge products are shared with WE4F partners and the public; on IDA and other relevant GIZ-internal channels. This can be done through multiple channels, such as reports, blogs, videos, webinars, documentary photography, panel discussions, infographics, etc.

Draws up reports and presentation documents.

Prepares input for various project/programme reports including annual reports and contributes to the other reports required by the programme manager and GIZ Head Office

4.Project management tasks

The advisor

Assists with general project planning and develops project concepts including preparation, organisation and moderation of planning exercises and their implementation, management, monitoring, quality management, evaluation, communication and documentation

Coordinates relevant project activities at local level in consultation with the manager and in cooperation with the partners, both as regards implementation and preparing organisational aspects

Compiles the relevant information for joint activities and assignments
Handles contract management where needed (e.g. offer preparation, impact monitoring, project progress review, reporting)
